New Years Resolutions For Those Working in Care
Last year was tough, to say the least. Here at Medipost, we are constantly in awe of our customers who work in this industry. Your resilience and ability to take care of those in need is why we are grateful to work alongside such an inspiring group. This year we’ve set some goals and New Years Resolutions for ourselves and for this company, for example; playing a more active role in our community in Weymouth and getting involved in more UK-wide charity events. We would love to hear what your New Years resolutions are for the year too!
Often we get caught between setting goals that stick and become part of our everyday routine and setting tough goals that seem unachievable and are forgotten about by February. Research carried out by Strava in 2019 showed that people are most likely to give up their new years resolutions by January 19th!? Oh, dear…
We know it can be difficult to set achievable resolutions and goals, and that it can also be disheartening if we don’t achieve them. Working in care, be it in hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes, nursing homes, hospices or pharmacies is a massive achievement in itself. You should be immensely proud of the fact that you take care of others every single day. We’ve put together a few small resolutions for those working in care to help you take care of yourselves and live a healthy, happy 2022!
Reset at the end of the working day.
Whether you walk, get public transport, or drive home from work, it is always helpful to take a moment to reset at the end of the day. You might have had a really good day, a stressful one, or an emotionally testing day. Before you go back home to your loved ones, just take 2-5 minutes to switch off, relax or meditate. That could be in the form of deep breathing and positive affirmations, blasting a tune in your car, and singing at the top of your lungs, or closing your eyes and just being silent.
Creativity is key!
A 2016 study from the YMCA investigated the impact of lifestyle factors on wellbeing in the UK. The study found that mental stimulation through a creative hobby increased well-being by 13%. In a world where everything is online and we can often get stuck in a cycle of scrolling on social media, it can be difficult to commit to starting a creative hobby. Often we try to turn our creative hobbies into a side hustle to create extra income which can then take the fun and therapeutic qualities out of the experience. This year, why not try to take some time once a week to be creative for you and you alone. You could start a colouring book, write some short stories, take up photography or join a dance class… the possibilities are endless and so are the benefits! Being creative can increase your happiness, improve your mental health and wellbeing, and increase brain function!
Expand on your go-to recipes
It’s a common New Years’ goal for most to eat healthier, however by expanding your diet and cooking new meals, you’ll not only improve your diet but you will also get more endorphins from learning something new! They do say variety is the spice of life! Why not share this goal with your family and friends and make it a group activity now that we are able to see more people again. Meal prepping can also be a very effective way for those in the healthcare industry to save time, money and make sure they continue to eat a healthy diet.
Learn a new skill and put down the phone!
You could learn a new skill at home or start a new hobby at a club where you’ll have the opportunity to meet new people! By learning something new you will keep your brain engaged and active whilst releasing those endorphins you get from completing a new task successfully. This can be a great way of reducing your screen time as well. I don’t know about you, but I used to hate getting the screentime notification from my phone telling me how much I’d been on it. It’s amazing how much time we could be using to do something engaging and relaxing instead of endlessly scrolling.
Self-care
It’s so important to take care of yourself. Not just so you have the energy and means to take care of others, but to allow you to give back in a healthy way, reducing burnout. Any one of these resolutions could be seen as self-care. Whether it’s taking some down time to be creative, learning something new, prepping your healthy meals, or pampering yourself. You deserve a happy, healthy 2022.
Best wishes for the year, from Brydie and the Medipost team.
